God
presiding over Scribes and magicians. One of the most ancient of
all the gods Thoth is the lunar counter part of the sun god Ra. Thoth
has been credited with the creation of the secret mysteries, the hieroglyphs,
astrology, astronomy, He is the God of Wisdom and Intelligence.
Most commonly depicted as a man with the head of an Ibis bird he is also
depicted as a baboon. Many regard Thoth as the mightiest of all the
gods. It was Thoth's wisdom that Tricked Ra into allowing the new
gods to be born from his Mother Nut. Thoth
is also the arbitrator and councilor of the gods. He is a strong
ally of Horus as well as Isis. He is also
a strong protector of his sisters Ma'at (Goddess
of Truth), and Seshat ( Goddess of History and
the library). He Protects both . Thoth plays an important
role in the Hall of Judgment (hall of two truths or hall of Ma'at).
Here It is Thoth that Is in charge of the scale where the heart is weighed
against the feather of truth. As Anubis
places the Heart on the Scale it is Thoth that makes sure the Scale is
working correct. Thoth then writes the name of the departed down
with the results. It has also been known for Thoth to change the
verdict and grant the departed lenience if a situation calls for it.
Thoth is also the God of Magick and has been linked to Hermes of the Greeks.
But unlike Hermes Thoth is not just a messenger of the Gods he plays a
very critical role and at many times sways Ra to do his will.
Thoth is perhaps one of the most underrated Gods in the Egyptian Pantheon.
Thoth is also a
title of High Priest in pre dynasty and old kingdom egypt. In some
stories Thoth is a title of Osiris the two becoming
separate very early on in Egyptian history. In some legends it is
Osiris that teaches the secret mysteries and the
art of writing which gives some support to the link.
